paper bag-artist statement.

Caitlin Farradas

Artist Statement.

In my piece the paper bag is repeated and overlapped over itself three times. I wanted to show the fluidity within change. As a reoccurring theme in my work change is an elusive subject . You do not figure out that you have changed until it has happened, I have felt this way many times. I’ve change so much in the last couple years, most people have. I went from a super conservative school environment to something completely open, and so my perspectives and ideas changed. Looking back on it now I see where the changes took place, but while it was happening? Not at all. Which is why I made the piece overlap, and made it very fluid. Change is graceful. Its sneaky, and no matter how much you do change, you are always the same taking a different form. Which is why the bag takes on many different forms.

I chose to use warm base colors and cool colors to bring out values.  I also chose a neutral environment because I thought it would accommodate the subject and the meaning. The medium is aquarelles, watercolor pencils. Which I used in various ways to create the effect that is happening in this piece. This piece is especially natural to me because change is a subject I deal with a lot, but experimental because I was working with a new media, and a new way of showing change. By changing the way I’m working I’m connecting with my idea on a whole new level.

DONE !!!!!

its about change and such as is most my work. i like the fluidity so there

The Reason Why

I always end up asking myself, Caitlin why? In many places and situations. Most of the time though its with the tedious art ideas i stick myself with like the endless rubber bands that covered my sculpture freshman year, or the hundreds  of snake scales that gave meaning to my concentration at the end of last school year and last but not least the 20-some hand-made flowers that now sit pretty on my handbag? Why? I do all of this because of my fascination with the smaller more beautiful things in life. No i'm not an artist. I am a fashion designer, my heart and soul thrive on the thrill of making something new. Even when my lovely Viking (sewing machine) decides to pull a not-so-lovely bobbin malfunction every moment, every single moment is worth that finished garment. The excitement that grows inside me when I see my finished work. So even though I wish that I did not have to paint or do fine arts, it's all worth it. Every minute. Carrying on a sewing machine on a plane to Chicago and having security open my tulle filled carry-on. If I get to that final goal, which I will. All this time will be worth it not a second wasted. I realize that I have become a slave to my passion. I think up insanities that are a pain to make but are a beauty to look at. No matter how many times I prick my fingers making hand-mades or scream at my Viking for sucking my fabric into the machine forcing me to take the whole thing apart to save the piece. It's worth it. My work is worth it. Its part of me. Its the reason why.

Fashion

Fashion. One of the most amazing things in my eyes. The way it can transform a person, give you a impression, the way people's "phases" are often measured by what they wore. Fashion is there for a girl in ways a man can only dream of. I have realized that fashion is art connected to life, people, and their mood. What they see, who they are who they hang out with, even the music you listen to. I get inspired to make fashion in my sleep, looking out the window, nature, others, my mood, a fabric. Its become a vital part of my existence. Because when you live for a dream I'll tell you this you put everything aside. Love, lux, and even other people. Because for the true dreamer sanity  is over rated.

uncertainty

I wish i could tell you I know what I'm doing. I don't. i know where I'm headed but I'm not really sure how to get there. I want this blog to be my opening up with out really saying anything. General honesty. I will be posting my work up and I  hope that can get the most out of this. I want everyone who sees this blog to learn a little bit about me. Hopefully it will work.
